The Javier Niño Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Javier Niño Memorial Scholarship Fund at Austin Classical Guitar exists to honor the memory of a wonderful young man who brought joy through beauty and kindness to countless people during his lifetime, and to support young classical guitarists in Austin, Texas—through scholarship lessons and other means—who show great promise and who will benefit from access to expert instruction and mentorship.

Javi was a leader among his peers. He distinguished himself academically and musically. His personal drive led him to excel, win an audition to change schools to further his scholastic ambitions, and ultimately pursue higher education. This fund is created in his honor to assist other students who show promise to take a similar path.

Scholarship recipients will be students in Austin, Texas, in their junior or senior year of high school, and identified through special nominations by their classroom music teachers. Award considerations will be musical merit, financial need, intent to pursue higher education, and academic performance. Nominees will be required to submit a short personal statement. Recipients will receive weekly lessons with a mentor teacher of recognized excellence throughout the school year in which the award is made. They will also be eligible for a free instrument, and special access to mentorship and performance opportunities. Awards are one year, with the possibility of renewal from junior to senior year.

Javi’s mother spoke about her son in an interview aired on the Texas Standard.
